Up until this year, my husband and I always joke about how neither one of us needed a college education to do our well-paying jobs, yet we both got one. I went beyond college and got an MA in Health Psychology, only to work in the actual field for 3 years before abandoning it to become a personal trainer. I happen to be a very good one and went out on my own and earned a very respectable $60-$110/hour. This allowed me to work part time, as was always my vision, and do what I love!
My husband completed a few semesters of college before enlisting in the Marines where he was trained to be an Air Traffic Controller—a very well paying job that does not require a degree at all. (However, there are many detractions to the job, which is why he ultimately quit despite the great salary).
This article makes a great argument to convince some folks to stop relying on a college degree to get you a well-paying job. As time goes on, you need more and more education to make a decent living and by that time, you’re so deep in debt you spend half of your career just paying it off. I won’t knock higher education, as it provides some skills that trade schools and apprenticeships cannot (like critical thinking!). I just think our up and coming generations need to keep a more open mind. What do you think?
