Refinishing Old Wood with Coconut Oil

We are about to return to a stick-and-bricks home after 7 months living in an RV full-time! Since we sold EVERY piece of furniture we owned before we left, we will be scouring antique stores, second hand stores, Facebook groups and Craigslist to repopulate a home with furniture. I expect to find some diamonds in the rough and have to bring them back to life!

Using coconut oil is a great alternative to tung oil, because it is completely non-toxic and edible, great for your skin, and adds luster to your furniture as it does not dry out. As a bonus, it removes funky smells! Plus, you might already have it in your cabinet! I’ve never seen tung oil anywhere while out and about so I’d have to make a special trip, and then, probably never use it again. With coconut oil, you’ll likely have to use a furniture wax as the author of the post below describes, but I’m excited to try this technique out!

To refinish old dry wood simply sand and wash with warm soapy water. Let the wood dry out (after washing it). Now using a clean dry rag apply a thin coat of coconut oil. Let it sit for 5 minutes or so, and then buff (wipe in a circular motion). Repeat if the wood is really dry.
