When we stayed in an RV park in Louisiana there was torrential downpours. Of course, I had to do laundry and walk through the sloshy Louisiana mud to get to the laundry room. To make matters worse, scattered about the marshy lawn were gross mud-mounds like the one pictured above. I had NO idea what made these mud houses, but they horrified me. I imagined some alien creature or gigantic spider would pop out at any given moment and jump onto my leg. I had a serious case of heebie-jeebies. The unknown is almost always worse than the reality.
I forgot all about these holes until about a half hour ago when I walked my daughter over to the pond here at the RV park we’re staying at in Virginia. There were those mud piles again. THIS time, I would discover what made them. Turns out, they’re crayfish. Not at all scary to me now. I tried to find a more inclusive list but this was the only one I could find that had any pictures at all! So if you have mysterious holes in your yard and no wildlife to be seen, I’m sure you can solve your mystery with the guide below:
