If you’ve ever renovated a home, or have owned as many as I have, this question tends to come up frequently. We have gotten knock-down crazy with our new obsession with “open floor plans” and want to knock down every wall that isn’t holding a bathroom or bedroom in. I’m not criticizing. I do this too. But there are inherent questions that come along with this.
In our new home, our kitchen has a strange characteristic. One side of the room has the refrigerator built back into a wall, and next to that, 2 feet of drywall, and next to that, a door that leads into the space behind that wall. Behind that wall is the water heater and an old boiler that doesn’t work. My immediate instinct is: “We need to knock down this damn wall.” My husband’s instinct is: “It’s not as easy or cheap as you think. There is wiring in this wall.” Yes, there is one outlet. And the ceiling in this sort-of closet space is not finished. Maybe it’s not a project for today, but I don’t think this is an enormous or expensive job.
Who’s right? The Family Handyman helps answer the question but doesn’t give an inkling on cost.
