I suppose I am “one of those jerks”, knowing full well when someone is pissed off at me for cutting to the end of the merge lane. But truly, I don’t do it to get ahead and “beat” everyone to the single lane. I do it for the very reason this article describes: If EVERYONE just filled in that lane and merged in a zipper-like fashion, traffic would move more efficiently.
Following this same logic, I also get out of the way if I’m in the right lane and traffic is merging in from another highway, if I can. If I can’t, I slow down or speed up appropriately for the merging car to make its way into the line in an efficient manner. So please read this article and SHARE it so more people can feel ok about jumping to the head of the merge lane: it’s better for everyone!
