I’ve always known there were negative effects of fluorescent lighting, which is also part of the reason why I quit my job in research many years ago. But I haven’t read the specifics lately and this was a good reminder. I did some fact checking and there are some things to bear in mind. The open, single envelope CFL, like the spirally one pictured above, are the kind that may emit UV rays similar to that of the sun. You also have to be quite close to it to receive such levels of radiation. The closed, double envelope version that is round like an incandescent bulb is more protective.
