This is an interesting little trick, and it’s something I never would have thought of. However, if you lost power at your house and for long enough for the refrigerated food to have spoiled, don’t get a rude awakening when you go to make your dinner!
The trick is simple and I saw it circulating lately on the net. Basically you freeze a cup of water then leave a penny on top of the frozen water. If your home loses power while you’re away you can know if it has been lost long enough for your food to defrost and get bad by how deep the coin goes into the water when you come back. If the coin is still where you left it then your home has not lost power.
