This story is amazing. I am beyond impressed that women banded together in the early 20th century to basically give holiday hypocrisy a big “FU”. The SPUG’s detested what Christmas had become, especially with regard to work “gifts” to higher-ups, which essentially equated to bribes. Founded by two extraordinarily wealthy women and backed by the working class ladies who had had enough of the ugliness of commercialism, the group of women made a statement that is just as applicable today as it was then.
