About a week ago we had a strong storm come through that almost knocked the hanging ferns on our porch to the ground. So my husband removed them from their hooks and placed them on the ground. There they stayed until yesterday when we went to water them before returning them to their respective places. Matt gasped when he picked it up. I rushed over to see what would evoke such an unusual exclamation from him and did the exact same thing. A perfect little woven next housing two little speckled eggs was precariously built in the center of our large fern. We both realized that the momma bird must have abandoned the nest once it hit the patio ground level. We felt so guilty. Especially Matt. He said, “Well I guess that’s why I kept seeing a bird fly in and out of there every time I opened the front door.” Duh.
While this nest wasn’t a hummingbird’s nest, it definitely prompted me to be much more aware of what wildlife might call your home, their home! And how disturbing nests can feel almost murderous when you’re an animal lover! The picture above is of a hummingbird’s nest made on the delicate branch of an evergreen shrub, but they might make their adorable little nests just about anywhere in a lovely garden.
