I think this picture makes the grub look way sexier than it actually is. When we first got married, we bought a house with an acre of land and I couldn’t WAIT to start gardening. That’s before I knew what this creature was. I remember digging into the ground to plant some roses and finding shovel-fulls of white, wriggling creepy-crawlers. I became a crazed killer, impaling, dissecting and smashing with my garden spade. And the ones that thought they could play dead and slink away unnoticed? HA HAHAhaha. Were THEY in for it. It was disturbing. AND I was a vegetarian at the time.

But after what may have been hours of this irrational assault, I realized my efforts were fruitless. I wish I had read this article back then. One of the suggestions, Neem Oil, has been a healing oil I’ve had in my medicine cabinet for years. It’s a powerful antifungal and anti-bacterial agent, so I guess it’s not surprising it can be an insecticide, even though it’s perfectly safe to use on your skin.

Here are a few more methods to more effectively eliminate garden grubs (who will mature into Japanese beetles so nip ’em in the bud at this stage!) than spade-assassination:
