Is the Black-and-Yellow Garden Spider Safe To Have Around? 

Our culture seems to have nurtured an unreasonable arachnophobia.  I don’t particularly want a spider to be crawling on me, and admit, I will likely over-react to finding one on my body. But if it’s in my house, (not near my bed), I leave it alone. Not that there aren’t spiders we should be wary of, you should simply know which of those spiders are an actual threat in your immediate vicinity and assume that the rest are probably good to keep around.

Garden spiders in particular might be of great assistance in keeping the true pest population down, hence preserving your plants.
