For as long as any of us can remember, we’ve been told that the appendix is just some useless artifact of evolution: a tiny extension of the colon that doesn’t serve a purpose. As it happens, this assumption simply didn’t sit well with some scientists who noticed that there are several mammals, like cats, that don’t have an appendix. Why would this be? They think it is sort of a holding area for good intestinal flora. “The scientists also discovered during the study that those animals that did have an appendix also had a higher concentration of lymphoid tissue in the gut, which plays a vital role within the immune system.”
