Best National Parks to Beat the Crowds

Great Basin National Park, Nevada: OK, Great Basin’s not really close to anything — it’s six hours east of Reno, four southwest of Salt Lake. That’s why only 100,000 people visited last year. But once you arrive you’ll be wowed by eerie, lovely Lehman Caves, gnarled bristlecone pines (the world’s oldest trees), daytime mountaintop views of half of the West, and, at night, some of the starriest skies in the world. www.nps.gov/grba Photo: RICHARD MILLER, SPECIAL TO THE EXPRESS-NEWS

While our visit to Yosemite National Park in our late 20’s struck awe and wonder in our hearts, we were yet to see all of the less populated beauty the country has to offer and were not yet annoyed by crowds. In fact, I liked people around back then!

Then we visited the Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico and, later, the Redwood National Park in California. I wouldn’t say we had to battle crowds at the Caverns but you certainly aren’t hiking down there alone and you pass many going in the opposite direction. Then the first trail we attempted to trek at Redwood was impassable at first. Only because the parking lot only afforded parking for 20 cars and there was a waiting queue. It was a little frustrating and almost sad. But now that I that there are lovely State Parks (The Redwoods are everywhere in Northern Cali!) and several National Parks that don’t fetch as much popularity, we will plan accordingly in the future. You can too, by reading what SFGate says are great National Parks where you won’t get trampled:
