The most shocking thing I learned by reading this article is that, in the US, 5 TONS of mercury is simply washed down the drain at the dentists office. Really?? This is astounding to me! Especially when we, as citizens, are asked to dispose of our mercury-filled CFL light bulbs, and our thermometers and thermostats responsbly by taking them to a recycle center. Meanwhile, our dentists, who use more of this metal in their work than anyone else, have thrown caution to the wind, polluting our waste water.
Dental Fillings Containing Mercury Now Banned in European Union
Europe, of course, always catches on to these things before we do and has recently banned the use of mercury in amalgam fillings, period. The US considered a similar ban several years ago but decided against it, quoting increased costs of the alternative.
