How to Prevent and Thaw Frozen Pipes

With the cold weather hitting the east coast, I’m sure there will be quite a few people finding at least one portion of this article handy. I’ve never personally had a pipe in my home freeze but we did encounter this issue in our RV last year, shortly after our initial departure in February. We mistakenly thought South Carolina would be warm enough for freezing pipes to not be an issue, but how wrong we were! Handling that issue is a different animal than what you’d have to tackle in your home, but it certainly alerted us to the very real threat! We always knew to turn off the valve to the outdoor hose bibs since those are the most likely to freeze, but your pipes inside the home close to exterior walls are concerns as well.

Water has a unique property in that it expands as it freezes. This expansion puts tremendous pressure on whatever is containing it, including metal or plastic pipes. No matter the strength of a container, expanding water can cause pipes to break.
