I grew up crocheting. My grandmother taught me. I learned at 8 years old and became quite fast. It was something I did in my free time well into my twenties. Unfortunately I never learned how to make anything truly creative. I only knew the stitches she taught me, but I recall how the focus it required felt very meditative.
