We certainly are spoiled campers these days with firestarter logs readily available to help light your puny campfire. Okay, this is a self-criticism. Maybe none of you do this. But after years of always having a wood-burning fireplace in my homes, and now, a firepit while camping full-time, I realized last night how reliant we became on firestarters. I don’t even think we’ve ever started a fire without one!
Last night after our first fire tuckered out and Matt said, “You can grab another fire starter if you want,” I paused, and looked around at all the tinder and kindling on the ground and thought how ridiculous it was that I even considered grabbing another fire starter. I got to work collecting and had the fire ablaze again in minutes.
Ok, there was still glowing embers to catch the tinder, so I cheated here. But I am bound and determined to begin the next fire from scratch using one of the methods mentioned below by field and stream.
Some of these contraptions are quite involved, so I get why it may seem pointless when a match alone is so much easier, but it may be good policy to at least know how to do one of these methods and say that you did it, should you ever be in an emergency situation without matches.
