How to grow Instagram followers: 10 steps without ads
New Instagram followers come from people who don’t know you yet. How a post reaches strangers and what you can do about it yourself — in Instagram’s own words.

Instagram followers don’t grow because you post more often to the ones you already have. A new person meets your post in recommendations, in Reels or in search — where Instagram itself decides who sees what. According to Instagram head Adam Mosseri, for strangers the thing that matters most is sends: how many people forwarded the post to a friend. Below are ten steps that open that path.
1 / 4Before you start growing
- 01Make the profile public
Nobody sees a private profile in recommendations. Settings → Account privacy → switch off “Private account”.
- 02Check your status
On a professional profile, “Account status” shows whether your posts can be recommended to strangers. If not, it also says which post is in the way.
- 03Fill in the profile
Photo, bio, category, contact button and link. A stranger spends three seconds on a profile and decides whether to follow.
2 / 4How to reach strangers
- 04Write what people forward
According to Mosseri, when a post is shown to strangers, a send matters a little more than a like. A list, a tip, “this is you” — what gets forwarded to a friend.
- 05Short video
Reels are Instagram’s main road to strangers. 15–30 seconds, the result or the question in the first two seconds, your own footage.
- 06A trial reel
Since December 2024 a reel can first be shown only to non-followers: after 24 hours Instagram shows you how it did, and you decide whether to share it with everyone.
- 07A collab post
According to Instagram, a collab post appears on both authors’ profiles and is shown to both audiences. A neighbouring business, a customer, a partner — one post for two audiences.
- 08Five hashtags on topic
Since late 2025 a post takes up to five hashtags. They don’t add views, but they help search and understanding the topic — pick precise ones, not popular ones.
3 / 4So they stay and come back
- 09Original, not a copy
Instagram no longer recommends people who re-upload other people’s videos and shows the original instead of the copy. Cropping and a watermark don’t make a video yours.
- 10The same days
Three or four posts a week and a story every day. A new follower decides in the first week whether to stay — nobody stays on an empty profile.
- 11Reply the same day
A reply to a comment and to a direct message the same day. A conversation is a good signal for the system and a reason for a person to stay.
- 12Check once a month
In insights, see which post brought the most new followers and repeat its format. Growth rarely comes from where you expect it.
4 / 4What won’t help
- 13Bought followers
Instagram removes artificially collected followers and likes and restricts the account. A bought follower doesn’t watch your reel — and the share the system measures drops.
- 14“Follow for follow”
Mutual-follow groups fall under the same rule: a follower who never reacts grows the number, not the profile.
✓The bottom line
Instagram followers grow where a stranger sees your post and likes it enough to send it to a friend. A public profile, short original video, collab posts and a regular rhythm — this road doesn’t take ads, it takes time.
Everything above is free and within the networks’ rules. If you still decide on a paid service, choose one that answers in Georgian and stands behind the result — for example, instaboost.ge.
