Why not every follower sees your post
The feed stopped being chronological long ago. How Facebook and Instagram decide who sees your post — and what you can change yourself.

Many people assume a follower sees every post. In fact the feed hasn’t been in time order for years: on Instagram since 2016, on Facebook even earlier. Both networks build a separate order for each person. According to Instagram head Adam Mosseri, in a chronological feed people were missing about 70 % of posts — almost half of them from close friends.
1 / 4How the feed is built
Facebook describes this process in its Transparency Center. Put simply, it happens in three steps.
- 01First, the candidates
The feed gathers every post it could show you: from the pages and people you follow, and from recommendations.
- 02Then, the prediction
Using thousands of signals, the system estimates in advance how likely you are to watch a post to the end, like it, comment on it or send it to someone.
- 03Finally, the order
Each post gets a relevance score and the feed is sorted by it. That is why two followers see completely different feeds at the same minute.
2 / 4What Instagram looks at
- 04Watch time
How long a person stays with your video or post. In January 2025 Mosseri named it among the three signals that matter most.
- 05Likes per reach
Not the number of likes but the share: how many liked it out of those who saw it. 50 likes on 200 views beats 50 likes on two thousand.
- 06Sends per reach
How many people forwarded the post to a friend in a direct message. According to Mosseri, this matters more when the post is shown to people who don’t follow you yet.
3 / 4What you can change yourself
- 07Lead with the point
The first second and the first line decide whether someone stops scrolling. In a video, show the result or the question right at the start.
- 08Ask a question
End the post with something simple that can be answered in one word. It is easy to reply to, and a comment is a good signal for the system.
- 09Write what people forward
A tip, a list or a useful fact — the kind of thing you would send a friend with “look, this is about you”.
- 10Reply to comments
Your reply reaches the person as a notification and they may come back to the post. A conversation under a post is a good signal too.
4 / 4How the reader sees the feed
- 11Favorites
On Instagram you can add up to 50 profiles to Favorites: their posts rank higher in the feed. The profile owner is not notified.
- 12Feed in time order
Tapping the Instagram logo opens a chronological feed: Favorites only, or everyone you follow. But by default the ranked feed still opens first.
- 13“Why am I seeing this post?”
On Facebook this item is in the post menu: it shows what pushed the post up in your feed. A good way to understand how the feed thinks.
✓The bottom line
Follower count only gives you a chance. The post is shown to those the system thinks will find it interesting. So the page that grows is the one whose posts get watched, liked and sent to friends.
